In the past year, I have never seen so many gambling commercials in my life. Gambling commercials are now a dime a dozen. All of these commercials show happy people gambling at a glamorous casino.. smiling.. and winning money. It is very misleading, because people winning in casinos are exceptions, and certainly not the rule.
Of course a casino commercial is not going to show a bunch of despondent, angry, depressed people who are losing their hard-earned money. People only get to see that when they are actually in a casino, playing their favorite slot machine, or sitting at a blackjack table. All you have to do is look around and see many people losing, sad, tranced-out, and perhaps suffering from a gambling addiction.
The problem with gambling nowadays, is that there is so much promotion for the activity, wherever you go. The proportion of advertising for help for people with problem gambling is quite disproportionate to the advertising for promotion of the activity.
It is a sad state of affairs when you see a casino popping up in every city and advertised consistently on your television set.
I believe that our society is just beginning to see the effects of this gambling revolution which is slowly growing like a cancer throughout the world.
If gambling were not such an addictive, expensive, destructive hobby, I would have no problem with all of this promotion.
I just believe that the whole industry is getting too close to many of our backyards... besides our television set. This cannot be good for addicts and non-addicts alike.
Things were definitely better when one had to fly to Las Vegas for some gambling action. It seems so long ago. I also knew a lot less people who were in trouble with gambling.... hmmm.
